Event Press Release: HERstory

Submitted by: Deanna L. Garwol

HERstory, sponsored by Phi Sigma Sigma and Women & Gender Studies Club, is a night celebrating the inspirational past, present, and future of the women of Canisius College. The event will be held Wednesday, March 14, 2018 from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM in Regis & Grupp.

The event will kick off with a guest speaker, Hon. Lenora Foote-Beavers ‘92. She is the Executive Assistant to Presiding Justice Gerald J. Whalen, the first African-American and first Buffalonian to hold this position. She serves as the Chief of Staff for the Fourth Department (22 counties). She is a Distinguished Alumni as well as a member of the DiGamma Honor Society and the Women’s Leadership Council here at Canisius.

After Lenora is done speaking, there will be plenty of fun activities for guests to partake in. We will be putting together a mural to celebrate the Women of Canisius. This will be displayed after the event for the remainder of March to celebrate National Women’s History Month..

At HERstory, we will also be doing a couple of service projects. There will be a gift card & gift basket raffle including, but not limited to, a gift card from Squeeze and a Canisius wear basket with proceeds being donated to Cornerstone Manor, Buffalo City Mission’s Women & Children’s Shelter. In addition, guests will be able to make cards of encouragement for women to receive in their time of need upon arrival to the shelter. Finally, we will be hosting a pad/tampon/bra drive. Guests are encouraged to donate any pads, tampons, and old/new bras they may have. All material donations will also be donated to Cornerstone Manor.

Music will be provided by The Wire as well as a special performance by The Crescendon’ts.

Free Paula’s Donuts, hot chocolate, and tea will be provided.

Keep an eye out on Phi Sigma Sigma’s instagram, @phisigcansius, for updates on our social media campaign, #HERstory. Everyday until the event, we will be featuring a different student, professor, or staff member who exemplifies what it means to be a woman of Canisius.

All guests are encouraged, but not required, to wear all black in support of the #TimesUp movement against sexual violence and sexual assault.
