Griff Fest: Canisius’ signature celebration

With the end of the spring 2017 semester rapidly approaching, students are working as hard as ever: turning in their last assignments, taking their last exams, and preparing for finals week. Meanwhile, seniors are preparing for graduation and going through their last classes as an undergraduate. Tension is high but excitement for the end of the semester is rapidly growing.

Of course, with the excitement for the end of the semester also comes the realization that Griff Fest is just around the corner! Griff Fest, put on by the Student Programming Board, SPB, is a time for students to come together to celebrate another successfully completed year of studying, test-taking, cramming and hard academic work. Here at Canisius, students work hard all semester long to turn in assignments on time while also balancing clubs, sports, and extracurricular activities. To relieve the stress that comes along with all this, students are encouraged to come participate in the festivities and have some fun before finals week begins.

This year’s Griff fest will be held on Friday, May 5, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. All Canisius students are invited to come to the festivities and events of the day. To keep everybody safe, only students of Canisius College with a valid I.D. will be able to attend the event and participate in its festivities. Students must have their I.D. on them and present it at the entrance in order to be admitted to the event. Alcohol is not permitted at the event, nor are any other illegal or impairing substances.

According to the Chair of SPB, they will be giving away free t-shirts in SPB WC 1018 from 12-2p.m. and 6-8p.m. on Wednesday, May 3. In addition to free things, there will also be food trucks including Lloyd’s, The Cheesy Chick, R&R BBQ, Amy’s Truck, Chiavetta’s, and Franco’s. Amy’s Truck is a newer addition with more vegan and vegetarian options. Other fun activities to be expected are inflatables, carnival games, and a caricature artist.

Perhaps one of the largest differences for Griff Fest this year is the change in music. For the past couple of years, live music has been the main music played at Griff Fest; however, it did not quite seem to be a big hit with the student body.

“We wanted students to be able to be at the event, hear a song that they love, and drop everything they were doing to dance with their friends,” Megan Murray, the event coordinator, said.

However, now that there will not be a large stage taking up a lot of room, a Ferris wheel will be taking its place! This Ferris wheel will allow students to go for a ride, see the campus from new heights and angles, and will provide the perfect selfie opportunity.

Griff Fest is once again projected to be a fun and safe time for the students here at Canisius. Make sure to join your friends for good food, lots of dancing, and memories that will last forever. Here’s to another year completed!
