The premier a cappella group of Canisius College, the CrescenDON’Ts, will be celebrating their 5th anniversary as an official club on campus this Saturday, December 12th, at 7:30 in the Marie Maday Theatre in Lyons Hall.  However, this will be no ordinary  CrescenDON’Ts concert.  In celebration, the club will be welcoming back alumni of the club to perform with them once again, singing songs past and present.

“We will be celebrating this anniversary with a huge concert,” exclaimed Nicolette Navarro, President of the CrescenDON’Ts, “we’re singing about 20 songs which is the most we have ever done! We invited all of our alumni back to sing with us, because we are singing about two songs from every year of CrescenDON’Ts. We again are incorporating lights, sounds, and dancing for our concert. This is our biggest show ever and I think it will be the best one yet!”

“I have absolutely loved having the alum come back to rehearse,” Navarro continued, “the alum are the reason that I wanted to do this concert in the first place. They are the greatest people, and they have shown me what it takes to be a good president and their love of the group fueled my love of it. Without them, there would be no CrescenDON’Ts. We are doing this concert to celebrate all the achievements that the DON’Ts have done in the past few years and to show how far we have come and where we can go in the future.”

Although the DON’Ts are still a relatively recent club on campus compared to The Griffin and Little Theatre dating back to the early 1930s, it has still undergone much change in its history.  “It has evolved in the sense that are arrangements are a little bit more challenging,” Navarro explained, in reference to her first year of DON’Ts as a freshman, “every year and we are more adventurous with what we try to accomplish. The vibe and friendships within the club for me, has stayed pretty consistent.”

During her time as President, Navarro has tried to make the DON’Ts better vocal performers and a bigger name on campus. “I have been on the E-Board since my sophomore year, the biggest thing I have tried to do is arranging a lot of our music,” Navarro continued, “I also try to sing at as many events as we can. A big thing I wanted to accomplish thing year was to first make our group a little bigger, we currently have 20 members. I also wanted to incorporate some sort of movement into our songs. The group usually stands in a U and sings. It is great in terms of hearing each other, but now that we are in year five, it’s time to move around and give our songs more power. We want to sound good and look good as well,” Navarro explained. “This year we have also included a light and sound company that specifically works with a cappella groups, ACP. We all will have wireless microphones for the concert and that is really exciting and will help with our blend!”

As a member of the club for all four of her years at Canisius, Navarro has sung many songs with the DON’Ts, however a few of her favorites are La La Latch, Daft Punk, Christmas Can Can, Hide and Seek, and Run to You.  All of which you can look forward to hearing at their concert, and many concerts to come.

As far as the future of the club, Navarro has high hopes. “I hope the club will still be strong and going. I hope that the club continues to be adventurous with their songs and add and incorporate more things to concerts. I think in about 5 more years,” Navarro continued, “this club can definitely start competing with other collegiate a cappella groups and perform at the ICCAs [International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella].”

“I read somewhere that singing together strengthens the bond between people,” Navarro stated, “and this is definitely true for the CrescenDON’Ts. As much as I loved arranging music and singing at events and concerts. The relationships I have made with the DON’Ts from past and present is amazing. Joining the CrescenDON’Ts was the best decision I ever made,” Navarro summarized, “I will never forget the memories or people in this group, because they have become my family.”  Join the CrescenDON’Ts in celebrating their successful five years on Saturday, December 12th at 7:30 p.m. in the Marie Maday Theatre in Lyons Hall.
