Griffs prep for senior day

The Canisius College Women’s Lacrosse team saw its program record nine-game winning streak halted over the weekend as they fell to No. 18 Boston College this past Saturday, 12-10. Despite the outcome, it was not for a lack of effort as the Griffs competed until the end against one of the nation’s best teams.

The Eagles carried an 8-3 lead into the half, thanks to two 4-0 goal runs over the course of the first half. After the Eagles opened the scoring in the second half, the Golden Griffins got two goals from leading scorer Tori Quinn and a goal from Maria Kotas to the game within three, 9-6.

After another quick answer from the Eagles, the Griffs pushed right back again, scoring four unanswered goals—including two more from Kotas—to even the score at 10-10. Unfortunately, the rally would be stopped short by two final goals from the Eagles and the Griffs saw their streak ended.

There is no reason or time for the team to wallow around. They will play their final regular season game and return to MAAC play on Saturday morning at the Demske Sports Complex when the Marist Red Foxes roll into town. The game will still have huge implications for the Griffs.

Not only will it be senior day for Morgan Leonard, Lindsay Morgan, Megan McGunigle and Gina Molfetta, but the Griffs will also have an opportunity to rewrite the program record books once more. A win over Marist will give them a chance to have the first undefeated conference record in program history. It would also mark their first-ever MAAC regular season title.

The Red Foxes are right on the Griffs’ heels as far as the standings go. They have won four in a row and are 4-1 in the MAAC. This is the only meeting between the two teams this season. Their last meeting was a year ago Saturday, when the Griffs claimed a 14-5 win to capture their second-straight conference title.

The winner will get the No.1 overall seed in the conference tournament and an automatic by to the championship game. The loser would have to carve out a win the semi-final round for a shot at the MAAC championship as No. 2 seed.

Game time is set for 11 a.m. on Saturday morning at the Demske Sports Complex. For all those interested in attending, admission for students is free with a valid Canisius I.D.
